Service Committees

NA Groups are the foundation of the NA service structure. It is the NA group, through the NA meetings they hold, that can best carry the message of recovery directly to the suffering addict and provide a setting in which a newcomer can identify with recovering addicts and find an atmosphere of recovery.

The primary purpose of any NA group is carrying the message of recovery to the addict who still suffers. The organizational duties required to carry the message into hospitals and institutions, make NA literature available, hold social events for our members, provide general information about the purpose and scope of NA to the general public, and provide other such services is beyond the means of most single groups and would make it difficult for them to focus on their primary purpose. Our Ninth Tradition tells us that our groups should not be organized in this manner, that we may instead create service committees that can organize these services on our behalf, so long as those service committees are directly responsible to the groups they serve.

Greater Smoky Mountain Area

The Greater Smoky Mountain Area Service Committee (GSMASC) serves groups in Knoxville and surrounding East Tennessee communities.

Volunteer Region

GSMASC is a member of the Volunteer Region of Narcotics Anonymous and sends a Regional Committee Member (RCM and an alternate RCM to participate in the Volunteer Regional Service Committee (VRSC). VRSC, in turn, sends a Regional Delegate (RD) and alternate RD to participate in the Narcotics Anonymous World Service Conference and Regional Assemblies.

Ninth Tradition of NA

NA, as such, ought never be organized, but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.
